Growing Tomatoes Outdoors with Hydroponics
Tomatoes are a rewarding crop for outdoor hydroponic growers. With the right setup, you can produce large yields of flavourful tomatoes throughout the Canadian summer. This guide covers everything from choosing a system to harvesting ripe fruit.
What You Need
- A Dutch bucket or drip irrigation hydroponic system
- Large net pots or grow bags
- Hydroponic nutrient solution formulated for fruiting plants
- Tomato seedlings or seeds (cherry and beefsteak varieties work well)
- Support stakes or a trellis
- pH and EC meters
Step 1: Choose Your Location
Pick a spot that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Shelter from strong winds is helpful, as tomato plants can be top-heavy once they start fruiting.
