Growing Lettuce Indoors with Hydroponics
Lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to grow hydroponically indoors. It grows quickly, requires minimal space, and thrives under basic grow lights. This guide walks you through the entire process from seed to harvest.
What You Need
- A small hydroponic system (deep water culture or Kratky method work well)
- Net pots and growing medium (clay pebbles or rockwool cubes)
- Hydroponic nutrient solution formulated for leafy greens
- A grow light (full-spectrum LED recommended)
- Lettuce seeds (butterhead and romaine varieties are great starters)
- pH testing kit
Step 1: Set Up Your System
Fill your reservoir with water and add the nutrient solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Aim for an EC of 0.8–1.2 for lettuce. Adjust the pH to between 5.5 and 6.5.
Step 2: Start Your Seeds
Place two to three seeds in each net pot filled with your growing medium. Keep the medium moist until germination, which typically takes five to seven days.
Step 3: Provide Light
Position your grow light 15–20 cm above the seedlings. Lettuce needs about 12–16 hours of light per day. A simple timer makes this easy to manage.
Step 4: Monitor and Maintain
Check the water level and nutrient concentration every few days. Top up with fresh nutrient solution as needed. Watch for any signs of nutrient deficiency such as yellowing leaves.
Step 5: Harvest
Most lettuce varieties are ready to harvest in 30–45 days. You can harvest outer leaves as needed or cut the whole head at the base. The plant will often regrow for a second harvest.
Tips for Success
- Keep the room temperature between 15°C and 22°C for best results.
- Good air circulation helps prevent mould and strengthens stems.
- Start new seeds every two weeks for a continuous supply of fresh lettuce.
