Getting seeds off to a strong start is the foundation of every successful hydroponic grow. Unlike soil gardening, hydroponic seed starting uses inert media that give you full control over moisture and nutrients from day one. This guide walks through the process from soaking your media to transplanting healthy seedlings into your system.

What You Need

Step 1: Prepare Your Growing Media

If using rockwool cubes, soak them in pH-adjusted water (5.5) for at least 30 minutes before use. Rockwool is naturally alkaline, so this pre-soak brings it into the right range for seed germination. Rapid rooters and sponge plugs can be used straight from the package with a quick soak in plain water.

Step 2: Plant Your Seeds

Place one or two seeds into the pre-made hole in each cube or plug. For tiny seeds like lettuce or basil, drop them in and leave them uncovered. For larger seeds like tomatoes or peppers, gently push them about 5 mm below the surface and lightly pinch the hole closed.

Step 3: Create a Humid Environment

Place the seeded cubes into your seedling tray and cover with the humidity dome. This keeps moisture levels high and consistent, which is critical for germination. Most seeds need 65–80% humidity to sprout reliably.

Step 4: Provide Warmth

Most vegetable seeds germinate best between 20°C and 26°C. A heat mat placed under the tray helps maintain a consistent temperature, especially in cooler rooms. Warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers benefit the most from bottom heat.

Step 5: Watch for Sprouts

Check your tray daily. Most leafy greens sprout in three to five days, while tomatoes and peppers can take seven to fourteen days. Once you see green, remove the humidity dome to improve air circulation and prevent damping off.

Step 6: Provide Light

As soon as seedlings emerge, they need light. Position a grow light 10–15 cm above the tray and run it for 14–16 hours per day. Seedlings that don’t get enough light will stretch and become leggy, which weakens them for transplanting.

Step 7: Begin Light Feeding

Once the first true leaves appear (not the initial seed leaves), start feeding with a dilute nutrient solution at about one-quarter strength. Water from the bottom by adding solution to the tray rather than pouring over the delicate seedlings.

Step 8: Thin and Select

If you planted two seeds per cube, thin to the strongest seedling once they have two sets of true leaves. Snip the weaker one at the base with scissors rather than pulling, which can disturb the roots of the keeper.

Step 9: Transplant into Your System

Seedlings are ready to move into your hydroponic system once they have a healthy root system poking out the bottom of the cube and at least two to three sets of true leaves. Place the entire cube or plug into a net pot with clay pebbles and set it into your system. Gradually increase nutrient strength to full over the first week.
